It all started with these polenta waffles last week. They were tasty, but my batter was too thick, so they didn't spread and weren't very pretty. As a result, my waffling desire was left unfulfilled.
A few days later, the kids asked for grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch. I don't know why, but I find the pan frying of bread and cheese to be quite laborious. Even thought it's really not. So I decided to make grilled cheese with my waffle iron. It wasn't easier, faster, or less messy, but it was fun. And having the pre-printed lines made it very easy to cut the sandwiches into dipping sticks, the way the kids like. And I got to eat the ultra-fried cheese that stuck in the waffle iron. Ohhh.
By then, I was on a waffling roll. For my finale (before I put the waffle iron back into the depths of our cavernous appliance cabinet), I bread-machine baked a loaf of french bread, left it out to dry overnight, and made waffle french toast with it in the morning.
I have to say, the french toast was the least successful. It's just too delicate. Sure does look pretty though. Looking at it now, it would be really nice dusted with some powdered sugar.
What non-waffle things do you like to waffle?
