pomegranates

'Tis the season for lovely red pomegranates! I picked up a few at Trader Joe's yesterday for just under $2 each. They sure are a pain to peel—I averaged 10 minutes per pom—but I only buy them once or twice each winter, so I manage. I'm thinking of trying Dana's double dark chocolate pomegranate cookies, but we'll see if the kids eat all the pomegranate before I get to baking.

When you're shopping, make sure you choose pomegranates that feel heavy for their size. That means they're full of juice, which is just what you want. Same goes for oranges. Ooh, wouldn't oranges and pomegranates make a lovely salad?

Don't forget—just one more day to enter the calendar giveaway! Deadline is Tuesday at 11:59pm.

There's a trick for speedier peeling of poms where you soak them in water. I can't remember all the details (hot or cold), but I did it once last year and it worked like a dream. Google it. I'm sure I found it in a magazine or something and it could be found online.
